Why is the difference so huge?
Because Bangladesh primarily exports manual, unskilled labor, while countries like the Philippines and India have built structured training systems and they equip their youth with internationally demanded skills and prepare them for specific job markets around the world.
Moreover, these countries have worked to build a positive national brand. The Filipino workforce, for example, is known globally for professionalism in healthcare and hospitality. In contrast, Bangladesh is often perceived as a source of unskilled, low-paid workers.
We have failed to position ourselves on the global skilled workforce map. Our Green Bangladeshi passport holds little value internationally, largely due to the lack of branding and quality skill development.
The training programs in Bangladesh are outdated, often based on 20-year-old standards that no longer meet global job market demands. We lack the new, globally demandable courses that are shaping industries in countries like Germany, Japan, USA, UK, UAE, and Australia.
The Missed Opportunity
Foreign remittance currently contributes around 6% to our GDP. But with the right strategy, modern skill development, and global-standard vocational training, this figure could easily be increased 10 to 15 times.
Another critical issue is our education mindset. Students and guardians focus solely on obtaining university degrees, often leading to unemployment and frustration. If instead, students were given access to career-focused trade education starting from Year 11, they could enter the global job market earlier, with better earnings and a clearer path to success – while easing the pressure on universities.
